The Obesity Control Center understands that any medical procedure can be a stressful one. For that reason we have carefully designed an experience that is both successful and pleasing.

You will be treated with sensitivity and gentle care at every turn and return to your home relaxed, restored and ready to realize a new life journey. Here is a quick overview of how your three-day event will unfold.

Day One: Arrival

Upon arrival at the San Diego Airport, you will be met by our driver in the baggage claim area. If arrival is by noon, you will be driven to our hospital for your pre-op medical evaluations, which include lab and EKG tests. You will also meet with our cardiologist who will go over your health history and consult with our nutritionist regarding your post-op diet and food plan. You may also meet with Dr. Ortiz or Dr. Martinez at this time.

Once these matters are completed, you will be driven to your designated hotel with five-star accommodations where your companion may eat a light meal as you continue on your pre-op diet. You may want to go sightseeing, shopping or take a dip in the pool.

If you arrive later in the day (after 12:00pm), you will be driven from the airport directly to your hotel where you can relax and enjoy the hotel amenities. Your pre-op evaluations will be done the next morning prior to your surgery.

Day Two: Surgery

Following admission to our surgery hosital, you will be taken to your private suite where you will be prepared for surgery. You will meet with your anesthesiologist and surgical nurse where some evaluations will be performed along with a respiratory function test. You will then meet again with Dr. Ariel Ortiz and Dr. Martinez where they will answer any last minute questions you and your companions may have.

Your procedure is performed using a laparoscopic approach and surgery time can vary for each individual. Family members can expect a wait of one to two hours. After your surgery is completed, your family will be advised of your status by our lead surgeon.

Recovery varies with each patient. Most patients are up and walking within a few hours of the surgery and experience only mild discomfort. Pain medications are provided, as needed, which assists in early mobilization.

Day Three: Recovery

The morning after the procedure, the patient has frequently fully recovered. He or she is walking, has taken a shower, and is on a diet of clear liquids. A discharge from the hospital to the hotel usually follows.

A recovery period of an additional 24 hours at the hotel is recommended. You are encouraged to relax at the facility, walk around the grounds and enjoy your beautiful surroundings during your recovery. The hotel restaurant is also accustomed to providing our patients with approved clear liquid diets as well. You will be able to enjoy clear broths and juices from the restaurants with your companions.

We require that all patients commit to follow-up either at the OCC or a qualified center near their home. 6 to 8 weeks after the procedure, the need for adjustments is addressed. Adjustments are performed at our hospital, usually under fluoroscopy.

If you choose to continue with Obesity Control Center for your after-care service, you will be treated to one of the most extensive and comprehensive Follow-Up Programs in the world. You can read more about this in the Follow-Up Care section, but be assured that this progressive program is a key to long-term weight loss success and is being hailed as the best in the industry.
