About the Endoscopic Sleeve

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, a state-of-the-art minimally invasive procedure, offers a surgery-free alternative and is suitable for individuals who are ineligible for or prefer not to undergo bariatric surgery. This ambulatory procedure allows patients to have the treatment done and be discharged on the same day.

  • Cost: Starting at $6,800
  • Recovery: Ambulatory
  • Included in Cost: Pricing covers pre-op testing, surgery, anesthesia, post-op care, transportation, medications, 5-year follow-up, and 24/7 aftercare. Airfare is not included
  • Discomfort: Minimal

The endoscopic sleeve procedure is an innovative, non-surgical solution for weight loss. It relies on fine endoscopic sutures to fashion a narrow, sleeve-shaped stomach. The process is similar to a conventional sleeve gastrectomy but does not require invasive cutting of the stomach tissues. 24-26

What is an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a cutting-edge, minimally invasive procedure that does not require surgery. It is often a viable choice for those patients who do not qualify for, or who do not desire bariatric surgery. The endoscopic sleeve procedure is ambulatory, meaning the patients come in, have the procedure done, and then are discharged that same day. For instance, the procedure could potentially be performed on a Friday, and the patient would be able to show up for work on Monday.

There is no need for incisions or scarring with this approach since the procedure is performed through the mouth. After an endoscopic sleeve is placed, the stomach is resized to hold significantly less volume than before. While the amount of weight loss achieved is typically less than with a gastric sleeve, it is important to note that even a 10% loss of total body weight is associated with either cure or improvement in diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia (cholesterol issues), so the endosleeve is still greatly beneficial and a valuable option to consider.

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure revolves around an endoscopic suturing device. Once the patient is placed under general anesthesia, the scope is threaded down the patient’s throat, arriving in the stomach region. Sutures are then placed endoscopically in a strategic pattern stretching from the antrum to the fundus. Once this step is complete, a new slender "sleeve" is formed within the stomach that will prevent overeating and thus help to curb excess weight.

Who is a good candidate for an endoscopic sleeve?

The endosleeve will only be considered for patients with a BMI of 25-35, as those with higher BMI's are unlikely to benefit. The procedure is not intended for morbidly obese individuals but for those who do not qualify to receive bariatric surgery. We will determine candidacy for an endoscopic sleeve in Tijuana, Mexico at OCC on a case-by-case basis during a private, in-depth consultation.

After an endoscopic sleeve

Because the endosleeve is non-invasive and non-surgical, patients can enjoy a swift and stress-free recovery. Patients spend a few hours in the recovery suite before they are discharged the same day*. Aftercare instructions will be provided and include recommendations for a soft food/liquid diet at first. Patients will need to get used to eating less and the fact that overeating may cause discomfort. The endoscopic sleeve procedure should be accompanied by a healthy diet and exercise regimen customized to the patient’s wishes and goals. We will carefully monitor patient recovery to ensure the most effective outcome. 24-26

Managing expectations for results

Our integrity demands that we are always honest with patients regarding their expectations for their results. The endoscopic sleeve will not produce outcomes on par with those of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve). (An endosleeve may lead to around a 50% loss of excess weight, whereas a gastric sleeve typically allows for up to a 70-80% loss.) However, the weight loss provided by the endosleeve can be life-changing and have an enormous effect on overall health and longevity, all without invasive surgery or longer downtimes. 24-26
