Lap Band

The Obesity Control Center is a world leader in gastric band (lap band) surgeries and its surgeons have performed more procedures of this type than anyone else in the world. Our surgeons not only are among the most qualified in the world, they also serve as instructing doctors having trained many of the leading American surgeons in this field.

Over 20 years of experience and more than 23,000 patients is what sets us apart at OCC. We are the busiest standalone Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and this gives us a unique advantage, especially when it comes to the Lap-Band. Lap-Band (also known as a gastric band) surgery is a procedure that helps limit your food intake and makes you feel fuller with fewer amounts of food. Lap-Band surgery is an effective medical procedure that has helped countless people get over the enormous hurdle of losing weight.

For many people, losing weight isn’t as simple as starting a new diet or implementing a new exercise routine. All over the world, millions of people struggle to achieve weight loss for a number of reasons, both medical and psychological. And while the Lap-Band was one of the first innovations in gastric surgery, OCC is also a pioneer of the advanced Improved Gastric Sleeve and Gastric Plication surgeries. We also offer revisions for those who wish to advance from a Lap-Band to another procedure.

How Does The Lap-Band Procedure Work?

The band is implanted using laparoscopic (minimally invasive) surgery while patients are under anesthesia and it is considered to be a safe and effective way to achieve and maintain a healthier weight without cutting or stapling the stomach. As patients lose weight, their band fit will change so periodic adjustments (using a saline solution in the band) keep them on track to meet their weight loss goals. The gastric band (Lap-Band) procedure is especially popular because it is designed for long-term use. As adjustable gastric banding surgery does not permanently change the anatomy of the stomach, the band can also be removed at any time if desired. At the Obesity Control Center, our Tijuana weight loss surgeons utilize the exclusive Ortiz Anti-Slip Stitch procedure, named after our lead physician who developed the technique, which ensures greater long-term success for patients.

  • A special band (LAP-BAND®/Realize® Band) is placed around the upper part of your stomach.
  • The band effectively divides your stomach into a small pouch and a larger lower stomach.
  • By creating a small pouch, your stomach is now only able to hold a limited amount of food.
  • The tightness of the band affects how much food you can eat before feeling full.

Lap Band FAQS

What’s the price for lap-band?

Depending on the type of gastric surgery requested, prices can vary from around $6,500 to $9,000 dollars. We suggest you look into testimonials online, talk to other patients, and don’t be misled by price. The savings by coming to OCC is around 50% of the cost in the US, so don’t risk it by looking for the lowest price. Your health and wellbeing are very valuable.

Included in the cost of your lap-band surgery:

  • 1 night stay at our world-renowned hospital
  • 1 night stay at a local 5-star hotel
  • Luxury transportation to and from the San Diego International Airport
  • Team of three board-certified surgeons, including two anesthesiologists
  • All operating room costs and surgical materials
  • All pre-op evaluations and follow-up care.

How do I prepare for gastric surgery?

Like in life, mental, physical, and nutritional preparation is essential for a successful outcome. Additional requirements may be suggested depending on your specific case.

Pre-operative weight loss will detox your liver, make it lighter, and result in a quicker, safer weight loss procedure with less impact on your overall status. Even 5% of total body weight loss will result in a dramatic improvement in your ability to respond to surgical stress.

How do I know if I’m a candidate for lap band surgery?

  • If you have had difficulty losing weight, then you know how frustrating this can be.
  • You’ve tried weight loss programs, but your weight always bounces back to even higher levels.
  • You don’t have the energy, will power, or financial means to implement a full-time fitness routine with professional trainers and nutritionists.
  • Your inability to lose weight is affecting other areas of your life, such as your relationships or career.
  • You’re worried that your weight gain will continue to worsen and potentially cause other serious medical problems.

Is getting lap-band in Mexico safe?

At OCC, we have over 22,000 patients that have traveled to our center with no major security incidents to report. We are at the heart of the commercial district, less than half a mile away from the international border to the U.S.A. Tijuana is now the second busiest medical destination for the traveling patient. At OCC, we are glad to be an essential part of this great reputation.

Are there any complications for lap-band?

A common occurrence for banded patients is the regurgitation of non-acidic swallowed food from the upper pouch, commonly known as PB’ing (Productive Burping). This is not to be considered normal. The patient should consider eating less, eating more slowly, or chewing their food more thoroughly. Occasionally, the narrow passage into the larger / lower part of the stomach may become blocked by a large portion of unchewed or unsuitable food.

What about nutrition after lap-band?

Our goal is for you to eat about a third of what you used to. Always try to choose good quality foods. The Lap-Band decides the quantity, you decide the quality. We want you to enjoy food and living life to the fullest by reaching your goal and staying there.
