“Everything is either an opportunity to grow, or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose.
View the events you consider to be obstacles as perfect opportunities to test your resolve and find your purpose.”
– Dr. Wayne Dyer
A Definition is a statement, assertion, or a theory that is consistent with what you believe to be true, and champion as “the truth.”
Definitions are the framework for our beliefs, which give us our values. They define for us how we decide, select and act.
Many people profess beliefs that are obviously false. These false beliefs are actually nothing more than myths or misconceptions. Here are some examples of the more destructive and common myths and misconceptions:
I had no choice.
He made me do it.
That’s just how I am.
It’s all my parent’s fault.
It’s all your fault.
If we don’t talk about it the issue will disappear.
If I don’t deal with it maybe it will resolve itself over time.
Myths and Misconceptions are false beliefs, and are not just harmful; they are toxic to living a holistic, empowered life. They give rise to primal rules that are harmful to your self-esteem, self-worth, decision-making, and self-love.
You cannot hold these false beliefs, myths and misconceptions and simultaneously empower yourself to create a new life that is inconsistent with the past.
An Assumption is an unfounded belief. Assumptions are unchallenged, unquestioned, unexamined, and very often untrue. Unfounded beliefs are second-hand information. We get them as hand-me-downs from others. They are not even our own!
Assumptions include rumors, myths, legends, folklore, blind-faith, and old-wives-tales. Our bias, prejudices, ignorance, and experiences manifest themselves in our assumptions.
Definitions, Myths and Assumptions are all feeder-systems for your beliefs, which give rise to your values, which informs your actions of the choices, decisions and possibilities that are available to you.
Said another way, your Definitions, Myths and Assumptions are your very own Glass Ceiling!
To begin newly, to create your life, to empower your inner Self, it is not enough to speak new things. You must actually think new thoughts that are inconsistent with previously held beliefs; thoughts that are not based on second-hand advice, or on myths, legends, folklore or gossip. You have to actually investigate your thinking, challenge your assumptions, and come at your life and what’s possible from a new approach, a new direction.
Said another way, we have to actually be conscious about creating new thoughts to retrain the brain about how to think, respond and predict the future. Unless we give it new information, it will continue to repeat old patterns. And we will have the “same-old, same-old” phenomena going on. Nothing new.
Have you heard the definition of insanity? Do the same old things, but expect different results
1. In your journal, keep a running list of all the things you like and appreciate about yourself. Whether it is a value like generosity or unconditional love, creativity or intelligence, or perhaps even your personal style or artistic flare! If you were a total stranger appreciating and acknowledging you, what would you see? What would you say?
1. Start a new board on Pinterest, collecting new ideas about fashion, design, health and wellness, places you’d like to go to, trips you’d like to take, or activities you’d like to engage in. Get outside yourself, expand yourself! Think new things! Explore new ideas! Create some pins!
3. Go to your favorite bookstore that has a coffee shop, and get a SKINNY beverage! Sit down in the magazine section and browse the hundreds of titles. Look at topics you have never even considered. Perhaps you are traditionally into home, cooking, crafts or gardening. Well, go to the fishing, kayaking, body-building or travel magazines! Buy a few, and tear out some of the photos or ads that really call to you! Begin a Vision Board that collects new ideas, inspires new dreams, and has you color outside the lines! Grow beyond your current Self!
4. Get online and explore some of the “Meet-Up” groups! Go meet new people, try on new interests, and explore new ideas! Come on! Get off the sofa and get out there in the world! Get your new skinny self all dolled up and go laugh a little and live a lot!
After all, this IS YOUR life! It’s up to you to create it like a work of art!
