A weight loss journey is never easy. Oftentimes, people will fall into their old habits and regain the weight they worked so hard to lose. While maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle is the first step to losing weight, there is also a deeper metabolic issue behind the inability to keep the weight off. Even if you have lost an enormous amount of weight, you can’t escape the biological reality that your body is going to try to gain back the pounds you lost, making surgery a more viable solution compared to diet and exercise alone.

With more than 50 years of combined experience, the weight loss surgeons at Obesity Control Center, which is just south of San Diego in Tijuana, Mexico is considered a world leader in weight-loss surgery. Using the most innovative techniques, advanced technology, and comprehensive post-op support, OCC helps people from around the globe achieve their weight-loss goals.

Why Is Keeping The Weight Off So Difficult?

Here’s a sobering fact: According to uofmhealth.org, about 90 percent of people who lose weight eventually regain just about all of it. Former contestants of the weight loss competition reality show “The Biggest Loser” prove that extreme weight loss through diet and exercise is simply too good to be true.

Ryan Benson, the first crowned winner of the TV show, lost 122 pounds, but he has since returned to his pre-show weight. Season 8 winner, Danny Cahill, started the show at 430 pounds, left it at 191 pounds, and now weighs 295 pounds. A 2016 study from the Intramural Research Program of the NIH followed more than a dozen former “Biggest Losers” and determined that of the 14 people studied, 13 regained a significant portion of the weight they lost on the show, and four of them were heavier in 2016 than they were before joining the competition.

The biggest truth is, extreme diet and exercise are not adaptable in real-world settings, especially when no one is there to support you in keeping the weight off.

Your weight is determined by a combination of several factors:

  • Genetics
  • Hormones
  • Behavior
  • Environment
  • Metabolism

In most cases, metabolic syndrome, or conditions that compromise the metabolism (e.g., diabetes and hypertension), may be the true culprits of weight gain and must be addressed with the appropriate metabolic and weight-loss surgical procedures, proven to be safe, effective, and long-lasting. Learn more about the role of bariatric surgery in the management of obesity by visiting pubmed.gov.

OCC Surgical Options

We have performed more than 23,000 bariatric procedures and have pioneered multiple techniques that are used around the world. We are fully accredited and follow the highest US medical safety standards. We also have the lowest complication and infection rate with a 20+ year track record of successful surgical procedures including:

  • Improved Gastric Sleeve – a procedure in which a vertical sleeve is created within the stomach through surgical stapling. As the sleeve is created, the rest of the stomach is stapled off and removed, causing the capacity for food within the stomach to become smaller. Over time, this will lead to healthy and sustainable weight loss that will solve the host of problems associated with metabolic disease.
  • Gastric Plication/Stomach Sparing Gastric Sleeve – in the traditional sleeve gastrectomy, a thin, approximately 8-inch long vertical sleeve is created through surgical stapling, and a portion of the stomach tissue is removed. In plication surgery, the stomach tissue is not removed but sutured. This eliminates the use of surgical staples, implants, or gastric resection. Gastric plication is one of the newest weight-loss innovations available at the OCC. This procedure, available exclusively at OCC, has shown to produce significant weight loss.
  • Mini-Gastric Bypass – consists of creating a smaller stomach pouch and attaching the terminal part of the small intestine to the new stomach. This alters the body’s normal digestive process as it restricts food intake and the number of calories the body absorbs.
  • Lap Band –  a band is implanted and wrapped around the upper part of the stomach using laparoscopic surgery. The band will ide the stomach into a small pouch and a larger lower stomach. By creating a small pouch, the stomach is able to hold just a limited amount of food, and the tightness of the band will affect how much food can be consumed before feeling full. The OCC is a world leader in gastric band (lap band) surgeries, and our surgeons have performed more procedures of this type than anyone else in the world.
  • Lap Band To Sleeve – this improved gastric sleeve can help anyone who has not experienced the weight loss results they desire from a Lap-Band. The Improved Gastric Sleeve (IGS) will allow patients to lose the remaining weight by reducing the size of a normal stomach, configuring the sleeve, and stapling lengthwise. This results in decreased stomach capacity, needing less food to feel full. This will not only achieve weight loss but also the remission of metabolic disease.
  • Metabolic Surgery – the alteration of the gastrointestinal tract will change the body’s neurohormonal environment, helping to achieve weight loss and the remission of metabolic disease. Performed laparoscopically, metabolic surgery is proven to drastically improve Diabetes Mellitus Type II.
  • OCC Sleeve Rescue & Tightening – this procedure can correct technical issues with a sleeve by resizing it smaller through a combined procedure that involves stapling (“re-sleeve”) and suturing (gastric plication).
  • Bariatric Revision Surgery – a revision surgery is not just a technique, but a scientific, evidence-based medical approach to correcting a failed weight loss procedure. The OCC Revision Surgery Program involves studying the patient’s medical records, affirming the patient’s understanding of the procedure, and reigniting their hope associated with a new procedure. Procedures include Sleeve Rescue, Bypass Rescue, Band Revision, and Plication Revision.

  • Gastric Bypass – a small pouch is created and attached to a section of the small intestine. This allows food to bypass a portion of the small intestine where calories and nutrients are absorbed. The smaller stomach creates a feeling of fullness more quickly, and as a result, less food is consumed.
  • Lap-Band Adjustment – some patients may not lose weight after a lap-band procedure, even if all proper protocols have been followed. They may require a small adjustment to “fine-tune” their band to resume weight loss.
  • Adolescent Weight-Loss Surgery – after scores of minimally invasive laparoscopic surgeries performed in our hospital on teens, patients can expect a 60% to 70% loss of excess weight. We believe this surgery is a life-changing experience when young adults are developing their self-image and beginning the socialization process.

OCC will guide you through five years of post-op care through our app, online support groups, and US-based on-call patient coordinators. That, along with our patients’ success stories will tell you what it is like to become part of our family.
