My name is Kate Tully, I am currently 30 years old and had the gastric sleeve surgery a year and a half ago, in November of 2018. I struggled with fertility and yo-yo’ed with my weight throughout my teens and twenties. I would go on diets and found that the only way to lose weight was by following a strict diet and exercise regimen that was not sustainable long-term.
I met the love of my life when I was 21 and we were married 3 years later. The next step for us was to start a family. At the age of 24, my husband and I started to try for a baby with no luck. Eventually, I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome). We spent years trying all the natural ways to conceive and started down the medically intervened options. Finally we accepted that having a baby was not an option for us.
Throughout my fertility trials and medications, I gained an additional 80 lbs, (on top of my normal chubby weight). Accepting defeat on our fertility and looking for a way to get my weight under control, I found Obesity Control Center through a prior patient.
As soon as I heard about OCC, I started doing my own extensive research, turns out several women dealing with PCOS saw significant improvement in their symptoms after the gastric sleeve surgery. I thought what the hell- it’s worth a shot.
It has been a year and a half since my surgery and I find myself down 110 lbs and currently expecting our first child. This surgery changed my life – my BMI went from 35 to 21, I started ovulating each and every month and had less facial hair. I honestly feel that without this option I would still be suffering from weight gain, irregular cycles and the pain of carrying around additional weight.
I have shared my story with all of my friends and family that asked about my weight loss in hopes it will help someone else who is struggling. The number one question I got was, “Were you nervous about going to Mexico for surgery?” My answer was, “Yes, but not any more nervous than going into any surgery”. The hotel accommodations where wonderful, the OCC staff was amazing and welcoming, and the surgeons did a fabulous job.
I will be forever grateful for the life changing gift they provided me.
