I do not recall a time I didn’t have some issue with my weight. Now, I didn’t always know I had a problem – that was made clear when in the 3rd grade I was put on my first diet. Not really a great ‘first’ to remember. And it was a continual ‘diet, fall off wagon, start over’ cycle for decades. I must have lost 1,000 pounds over that time. Mind you, I then proceeded to gain probably 2,000 pounds too.
I decided that WLS was the last available option for me to lose weight. My insurance did not offer coverage for this type of surgery, so when you are looking at ‘self-pay’ you look at ALL available options. My first contact with OCC was amazing. Ora was completely attentive and knowledgable. She made the decision making process comfortable and put any concerns I had at ease. I knew that this was not only the right decision for my health, but that OCC was the very best place to help me get there. Without hesitation, I went ahead and scheduled to have the VSG surgery.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared. I was terrified. I had never traveled to Mexico, never had a major surgery, never made a decision to put myself first. The medical staff and surgeons at OCC make it evident that they are in your corner 100% and will go that extra mile to make sure you succeed. They openly provide advice, information, tools – anything you need for your journey. The decision is difficult, the surgery can be scary, changing your life is daunting. Everyone at OCC made all of my concerns fly out of the window and they were most supportive through this whole process.
The changes have been subtle but impactful. I can teach my daughter to twirl baton rather than watch from the sidelines. I can walk as fast as the staff in my restaurant, where last year I had to get out of the way. I’m the same weight as my husband. It’s so many of the little things that add up to one big confirmation that this was the best decision I could have made for myself.
For anyone contemplating this surgery – self pay or not, whether to do the surgery in the US, CA or not, etc… – you will not get a better experience, a safer environment, a better surgeon and medical staff than what you will receive at OCC.
Over this whole process, I have currently lost 135lbs. I know that with the support of my family and the staff at OCC, they will continue to encourage me to meet my goals and succeed at this new life that I have been given.
