6 Months out of Surgery

I’m so happy with my progress. I already have loved ones considering making the trip to OCC themselves, and I fully support that!

In 2008, shortly after the birth of my first daughter, my husband and I decided to have Lap-Band surgery. We had heard about OCC from some family members who’d had a lot of success with their Lap-Band procedures. We rushed into it very quickly. I had the false idea that this would be my magic solution to obesity, an easy way out.

My experience at OCC was great. I was very impressed by the staff, especially Dr. Ortiz. In fact, it was a more pleasant experience than I’d ever had in any American hospital, if we’re honest. However, my success with the Lap-Band wasn’t great. I lost weight initially and kept it off for a while, but after the birth of my second daughter is 2010, the weight started creeping back on. My food choices weren’t good, and I pushed the band too much. Then, people we knew who’d also had Lap-Band surgeries started having severe complications from pushing their bands. Three people we know had to have emergency surgeries to remove their bands after they had “slipped.” This spooked me, and I immediately had my Lap-Band emptied.

Unfortunately, I, mentally, took that as permission to eat whatever, and as much as I wanted. My weight gain continued. In 2012 I had my third daughter and gained more. I started teaching full-time in 2015 and used my stress as an excuse to eat more and to eat poorly. My diet consisted of a lot of processed and fast foods. Since I was a teenager, I’ve struggled with depression and anxiety, and they got worse and worse. As a coping mechanism, I ate. And, I gained and gained.

In 2019, I reached a breaking point. I resigned from my job and started focusing on improving my health. At first, my primary focus was my mental health. 2020 and lockdown made this harder, but I continued to attend therapy sessions via Zoom. My eating habits were still not great. In the summer of 2020, my husband and I decided to take our girls on a road trip to see a few National Parks, including The Grand Canyon. It was a great trip, but there were so many things I could not do or fully enjoy because of my weight. Looking at myself in the pictures after the trip, I was shocked. I knew something had to change.

So, I started looking into options for bariatric surgery. It took months to find out that my insurance wouldn’t cover a cent of any bariatric procedure. I was discouraged, but then I remembered OCC and the positive experience of my Lap-Band surgery. I started reading about the different procedures available and ultimately decided that the IGS Improved Gastric Sleeve® was the best option. I would have had two separate surgeries in the states, one to remove the Lap-Band and another, a month or two later, to perform the sleeve surgery. And, it would have cost around 3x (or more) than what OCC charges, even with the flight down. OCC was definitely the right choice for me.

My surgery was on July 1st, 2021. I had a Lap-Band removal with revision to the IGS Improved Gastric Sleeve®. Once again, my experience at OCC was top-notch. I felt comfortable, and safe, and well cared for the entire time. It’s also nice to know that they’re always willing and eager to help and support me on my journey. I went many years without stepping on a scale, but when I weighed myself to get a beginning weight for OCC paperwork, I weighed 327.8 lbs. So far, I’ve lost 62 lbs since starting extended pre-op. In the 2 ½ months since surgery, I’ve lost 25.7 lbs.

I’m only just getting started. Who knows how far I’ll go? I plan to use this tool to help me get to a place physically and mentally where I can hike longer, run farther, dance more, perform better, and do so many things that bring me joy. I plan to use this tool to help me be around longer and more fully for my three beautiful daughters. I’m so happy with my progress. I already have loved ones considering making the trip to OCC themselves, and I fully support that! Thank you, OCC, for helping me take my life back.
