Natalie Tierney

Seattle, WA
1 Year out of Surgery

Hi there! My name is Natalie, and I’ve dealt with my weight my entire life. From the moment I was born, I was overweight. A doctor told my mom I didn’t have the chemical in my brain to tell me I was full. As I got older I was always the bigger girl, the kid who was always hungry. By the time I was 12 I was in Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and even tried Atkins. At age 15 I was 325 pounds, and miserable. My doctor, mother and I decided to try the LapBand. It worked well for a year, then my band slipped. Instead of doing something about it, I allowed myself to develop eating disorders, as I wasn’t even able to eat solid foods. I was so thin, only 130 pounds and I’m 5’7″!! I didn’t care that I was malnourished, as long as I was thin! In december of 2010 I had my LapBand removed in emergency. Almost a year later, I decided to get plication surgery to help maintain my weight loss from the band. The worst thing imaginable happened, and I never felt any restriction. I felt like I could eat anything I wanted. I was 18 years old and I’ve had two failed weight loss surgeries… I gave up, and I felt defeated.

For the years to follow I was in and out of more diets. I tried atkins again, calorie counting, HCG, and then… just gave into my Binge Eating Disorder and allowed myself to gain all of the weight back and more. In 2017 I started looking into surgery again, and kept getting scared. Scared of failure or complications. And I kept putting it off. I was also denied by insurance twice! I was so frustrated with it all. It was creating tension between me and my mom, and that killed me. Truly devastated me to think that my BED, my weight, and my actions were causing my mom and I to fight.

In June of 2020, my grandmother passed away. She was the light of my life. This woman helped raise me, and encouraged me in everything I did. When we were at her celebration of life, everyone was telling stories of all of her accomplishments, places she traveled and things that she did. I thought to myself, “I want to be just like her, but I can’t if I continue down this path.” Later that month, my mom sent me a link to OCC! She said “Just take a look. I’m not pressuring you at all.” As I looked over the website, and saw Dr. Ortiz and all of his accolades, I knew I had to take the leap. In the next three days, I had a surgery date, and I was to begin my extended preop diet on July 1st.

Something clicked, I was able to lose 50 pounds on my preop diet. I was so dedicated. I think it’s because I knew I couldn’t live my life to the fullest unless I got my health in order. On September 28th, 2020 I had the Improved Gastric Sleeve done. The entire experience was so reassuring, seamless, and gave me confidence that I was making the right decision. When I was out of surgery, the nurse asked if I knew that my plication had come undone. Yes, two thirds of my sutures were UNDONE!! No wonder I gained all that weight back!! I finally had answers.

Ever since surgery I have been so confident, so at ease. I no longer have to worry about food. I know what I can and cannot eat. I feel the weight I’ve been carrying with me all these years just dissipate. Since my surgery I have lost 43 pounds. I’ve gone from 403 pounds in June, to 310 pounds in December. If you are like me, and you have struggled with weight your whole life, or have had issues with other surgeons, hear me when I say this: OCC will take the best care of you. You can take your life back. If I can do it, so can you!
